Don’t be afraid to contact the attorneys you’re thinking about hiring to schedule a consultation.  You may want to schedule one or even a handful.  Consultations are like a job interview.  You should get a feeling during the consultation of whether your personality will mesh with the attorney and whether the attorney is competent in the area of your legal issue.  Can the attorney answer questions on the spot?  Is the attorney well-spoken?  Does the attorney look unkempt?  What does the attorney’s office look like – is it tidy and organized or a pigsty?  All of these things will give you a good indication of the attorney you should choose for your important legal matter.  Further, if you have several consultations, you should be able to weigh the attorneys against each other to figure out the attorney you like best, and you should be able to tell if one attorney is saying things drastically different from the others.  If you meet with 5 attorneys and 4 of them say very similar things and 1 responds completely differently, that could indicate that 1 attorney is way off base. Further, be wary of those attorneys who promise you the moon and the stars or make you guarantees. There are very few things in life that one can guarantee, and the same holds true for the law. An attorney should be able to assess your legal matter and discuss the matter’s strengths and weaknesses, but an attorney should not make promises about outcomes because the legal system is ultimately run by humans unpredictable.
