When you’re trying to find an attorney, look at lawyers’ websites.  This sounds obvious, but it’s important. Really read the websites.  You want to choose a lawyer who focuses on the area of law you’re dealing with.  Lawyers are (or should be) like doctors – many are focused on certain practice areas, where they build a level of competency by working in that area day after day.  If you have a family law issue, you don’t want to select a lawyer who only does car accident cases.  If you are involved in litigation, you don’t want a lawyer who only drafts contracts.  The area of law you’re interested in may have sub-specialties, too.  For instance, “family law” is a broad phrase.  It can encompass divorce, child custody, child support, spousal support (also known as alimony), guardianship, prenuptial agreements, adoptions and even child abuse and neglect cases.  But not everyone who handles divorces handles, for example, child abuse and neglect cases and vice versa.  Thus, it’s important that you understand what you’re looking for and really try to narrow down those search results to people who handle that precise area of law.

You should run the lawyers’ names through internet searches, too. Check out articles that the lawyers have written or are mentioned in. Check out the reviews (but be cautious of internet reviews — they can be misleading). Check out any reported cases that come up under the name. These results should indicate what area of law the lawyer really focuses on and how well the lawyer performs the work. Just remember that not everything on the internet is true! If you’re going to rely on a source when choosing a lawyer, make sure the source is a reputable one!
